On a property originally devoid of significant natural features or mature trees, and flanked closely by neighboring homes, the design establishes an extraordinary interior environment. A newly imagined landscape conceals the garage and offers an invitation to engage with the site in unexpected and inventive ways. A continuous stone bar hovers precariously at the building line, bends to define a private courtyard, and dramatically cantilevers 35 feet at the entry.
A separate gallery structure supports this secluded setting beyond, offering a carefully calibrated backdrop for a rotating collection of significant artworks. From the outset, a sequence of expectations is set forth, only to be subtly subverted as visitors meander through the site.
Inside, one is alternatively drawn horizontally into the landscape and further into the house. The living room is carved from the stone bar above, creating a space of surprising verticality. Curved glass panels and expansive retracting doors further blur the boundary between inside and out, encouraging a continuous exploration through the building and into the landscape.
