Project Description:
This design integrates two distinct types of spaces within a single building: the former is a traditional real estate showroom and sales center, while the latter is "10000 Coffee," a global boutique coffee chain from South Korea. These two spaces must operate independently while supporting each other in terms of functionality and daily use.
Located within a street block with dual-side road frontage in the Beitun District of Taichung, the building mass is positioned as close to the main road as permitted by setback regulations. The open space at the rear of the site is reserved for parking. To project a grand architectural scale and create a continuous urban street frontage, the building façade facing the main road has been extended to its maximum limit.
The two spaces, distinct in function and character, are separated by different entrance directions and levels. 10000 Coffee is located on the first floor facing the main road to accommodate high-frequency foot traffic and extended operating hours. Conversely, the real estate showroom and sales center is accessed from the side road, leading into a first-floor reception gallery. Visitors are then guided via a dramatic, multi-functional grand staircase or an exhibition ramp to the sample house on the mezzanine level (raised 1.8 meters) and the main exhibition hall and its ancillary spaces on the second floor.
Two large inclined walls co-create a 12-meter-high main exhibition hall. These two inclined walls form a triangular spire on the exterior, serving as the primary visual focus of the building's form. Sunlight diffuses into the interior through horizontal skylights on the sides of the spire, cascading down the two inclined walls to provide abundant and dynamic daylighting for the main exhibition hall and the multi-functional grand staircase.
At a height of 8 meters, the inclined wall facing the main road transitions into a horizontal eave. At the street corner, this eave extends into a 6-meter cantilevered circular cutout roof panel, supported below by Y-shaped steel columns. Skylight projects through the circular opening onto the courtyard below, creating a rich architectural vocabulary at the corner.
Located at the innermost part of the site is the sample house, elevated at 1.8 meters, which connects to the main building mass via a ramp and a semi-outdoor corridor. The exterior space between the main building and the sample house features a water courtyard and an artificial waterfall, serving as a buffer zone between the two different programs. Beneath the semi-outdoor corridor lies the outdoor seating area for 10000 Coffee. This outdoor seating area is separated from the street by a feature wall composed of 1,000 wooden blocks marked with the Roman numeral "X," subtly hinting at the theme of 10000 Coffee. An 18-meter-long table facing the water courtyard extends uninterrupted from the outdoors into the interior counter and seating area.
The core concept of this design is to create an architectural promenade, allowing people to experience and connect spaces of varying scales, light, and shadow as they move horizontally and vertically through the interior ramps and grand staircases.
