A vacant commercial space is turning into a wellness club, in the heart of Estrela, Lisbon.
Our client sought to bring in an international vibe to a private gym, lounge, bar, café, spa and therapy facilities. We have proposed an earthy, warm yet global aesthetic, where local craftsmanship and Portuguese materials & techniques are shown subtly throughout.
Different uses are offered within the same space and equally different atmospheres unfold across the floorplan. On entering, one is transported through various places across the globe, perceived from the use of crafted materials and traditional techniques. Their arrangement creates a consistent formal and conceptual narrative throughout.
A sand-stucco backdrop was applied on every wall, allowing hand-crafted materials and details
to contrast and be celebrated.
Bespoke cut pieces of Moleanos, a sandstone from the centre of Portugal, feature in numerous positions within the space, introducing soft light colours in contrast with other raw materials
such as wood, rattan and terracotta. Traditional rattan techniques are used as contemporary architectural elements such as dropped ceiling panels and door lintels.
Subtle nods to Lisbon’s history and architectural legacy manifest in design elements such as a handrail and rattan doors, inspired by the early Pombalino period.
The sofas located in the entrance lounge are bespoke soft furniture design, materialized with Moleanos stone serving as base for bespoke cushions and upholstery.
Members areas vary between lounges and spaces offering the social and the intimate, along with the flexibility of use across day and night for exhibitions, talks, or private events.
