The historic and sociopolitically significant Adult-Education-Center-Building in Ottakring Vienna, dating from 1905, was extensively renovated, remodeled, reorganized, and completely upgraded both structurally and technically. While listed building elements (the façade, the historic main entrance, and the central staircase) were largely preserved in their original state during the renovation, the interior spatial structure was significantly altered and expanded. The site, flanked by perimeter block development, tapered into the courtyard and completely built on, presented a particular challenge. Highly complex conversion measures resulted in future usability with more usable space. Accordingly, fire compartments were renovated and adapted to the building structure, and barrier-free access was enabled. The addition of a storey to the top floor created additional space for classrooms. Course and administrative areas are now clearly separated from one another. Some of the rooms can be connected to accommodate flexible needs. This also applies to the centerpiece, "Cloud 16." On the formerly unused roof area in the courtyard wing, a multifunctional room and a social room can now be combined, offering direct access to the surrounding terrace, which invites guests to linger. This is shaded by a green trellis; other flat roofs are extensively landscaped. The relief of an owl, a symbol of wisdom, enthroned at the corner of the house, which was removed during previous renovations, has been restored to its original position through a reinterpretation as a metal structure.
