ADHOC architectes teamed up with a group of students to create and build an outdoor stage canopy for an architectural event in Quebec City, Canada called the S.P.O.T. : Sympathique Place Ouverte à Tous. The name of the event, which was created by students at Laval University School of Architecture, means "fun place open to everyone" in French.
The main theme of the event was "play". Our team was inspired by the days of our childhood: the games we invented, the dark nights gazing at the sky, and the sunny afternoons playing in the flower covered fields. The beauty, the lightness and the simplicity of paper toy windmills created an unexpected and charming atmosphere in the interior courtyard where the event took place. The organic installation brings together a simple construction method and a playful character. Assembled from an ultra reflective film designed for road signs, the installation glistens in the light. As the day goes by, Vol-au-vent transforms itself from a treelike canopy during the daytime to a festive starry sky shimmering under the stage spotlights and creating vividly colourful constellations when the night comes. With its multiple reflections on hundreds of windmills spinning in the breeze, Vol-au-vent creates a unique atmosphere in a forgotten space in the city.
The installation shows how a minimum quantity of materials used in a creative and intelligent fashion can create a surprising, playful and summery place. The efficiency of the design combined with the low cost of materials allowed our team to create an effect worthy of important events despite a very tight budget.
Vol-au-vent blurs the lines between public art, architecture, performance arts and urban design. Pictures of the windmills appeared all over the social media giving the architectural installation an augmented presence in the city. Its popularity explains why it became the signature element during the three months long event. The unique atmosphere it created charmed the visitors whether it was for the Sunday morning yoga classes or for the wild party nights that took place under the canopy.
By combining the creative energy of students, professionals, artists and musicians, Vol-au-vent helped in creating a significant cultural hotspot for the local scene and attracted thousands of visitors during the whole summer.
