Located in the upper area of Sotogrande, Villa KALMA is a residential project by ARK Architects, designed by Manuel Ruiz Moriche, Creative Director and Co-Founder of the studio.
Set on an exceptionally flat plot, the project takes advantage of the site’s gentle topography to organise most of the main living programme on a single level, creating a home defined by comfort, functionality and an effortless relationship between interior and exterior spaces.
The villa opens primarily towards the east, framing views of the surrounding landscape and the Mediterranean while establishing a private and serene sequence of gardens, terraces and pool areas. The ground floor accommodates the main living spaces, kitchen, entrance and several bedrooms, while the upper level contains the master suite and an additional bedroom with elevated views over the landscape.
The basement extends beneath most of the footprint of the house and houses the wellness, leisure and service areas, including a gym, cinema, spa, sauna, games room, office and back-of-house facilities. A series of landscaped courtyards and light wells perforate the architecture, bringing natural light and ventilation into the lower level and maintaining a continuous connection with nature throughout the house.
Materiality plays a central role in the identity of Villa KALMA. The exterior is clad in travertine, while natural stone extends across the pool and outdoor areas, creating a restrained and cohesive architectural language. Light, texture and landscape work together to create an atmosphere of calm, while the clear organisation of the programme ensures a highly functional living experience.
Villa KALMA reflects ARK Architects’ approach to residential design, where emotion and function are conceived as complementary elements of the same architectural experience.
