VILLA AZUR is a contemporary private residence designed by ATELIER MZ in Casablanca, Morocco, on a 1,500 m² plot.
The project is defined by a strong contrast between exposed board-formed concrete, smooth white rendered surfaces, dark glazing and integrated vegetation. Its architecture combines a restrained material palette with deep overhangs, generous shaded areas and a careful relationship between built form and landscape.
The upper level is expressed as a monolithic concrete volume framing a large recessed glazed opening. This massive horizontal element projects beyond the ground floor, creating a deep cantilever that protects the entrance and produces a pronounced transition between light and shadow.
At ground level, a softly curved white wall introduces a more fluid geometry beneath the rigid concrete structure. This contrast between orthogonal and curved forms gives the façade a distinctive identity while reinforcing the visual weight of the upper volume.
Vegetation is integrated directly into the architectural composition. A continuous planted edge softens the concrete façade, while the surrounding landscape creates a strong dialogue between mineral surfaces and greenery.
Rather than treating the garden as a separate element, VILLA AZUR is conceived as a composition in which architecture and landscape reinforce one another. The concrete overhangs, recessed openings and planted terraces help create shaded intermediate spaces and a gradual transition between interior and exterior.
The material expression is deliberately restrained. Exposed concrete reveals the texture of its formwork, while white rendered surfaces bring lightness to the lower level. Dark glazing creates depth and contrast, allowing the façade to shift in character depending on the position of the sun.
VILLA AZUR reflects ATELIER MZ’s approach to residential architecture: designing contemporary villas through the interaction of site, structure, materiality, natural light, privacy and landscape.
The project demonstrates how a limited palette of materials and a clear volumetric strategy can create a strong architectural identity while remaining closely connected to its environment.
