VILLA ATLAS - Contemporary private villa in Casablanca, Morocco

VILLA ATLAS is a contemporary private residence designed by ATELIER MZ in Casablanca, Morocco. Completed in 2024 on a 2,500 m² plot, the project combines earth-toned rendered volumes, exposed concrete, natural stone, dark timber and large glazed openings around a carefully framed entrance sequence and landscaped courtyard.

Project description
VILLA ATLAS is a contemporary private residence designed by ATELIER MZ, a Casablanca-based architecture studio, on a 2,500 m² plot in Casablanca, Morocco.

Completed in 2024, the villa is defined by a composition of simple monolithic volumes finished in warm earth-toned render and connected by horizontal bands of exposed concrete.

The architecture is based on a deliberate contrast between mass and transparency, mineral surfaces and timber, enclosed volumes and carefully framed openings.

The entrance sequence becomes one of the main architectural elements of the project.

Two substantial volumes define a central axis leading toward a glazed opening and a landscaped courtyard. Exposed concrete beams extend horizontally between the different parts of the house, reinforcing the geometry of the composition while framing the approach to the entrance.

A mature olive tree placed along this axis introduces a natural focal point and establishes a direct relationship between architecture and landscape.

Dark vertical timber cladding is used on large entrance surfaces and portions of the façade, bringing warmth and depth to the otherwise mineral palette.

Natural stone appears around the central entrance area, creating a tactile transition between the rendered walls, exposed concrete and glazed surfaces.

The large black-framed windows reveal the interior spaces while maintaining a clear contrast with the warm exterior finishes. At dusk, the interior lighting transforms these glazed openings into illuminated planes, emphasizing the depth of the façade and the layered organization of the villa.

The project deliberately uses a limited material palette:

earth-toned render, exposed concrete, natural stone, dark timber, glass and landscape.

This restraint allows proportion, texture and shadow to define the architectural character of the house.

The horizontal concrete elements visually connect the different volumes and create a strong datum across the façade, while the upper masses remain deliberately solid and abstract.

Landscaping is integrated into the architectural composition rather than treated as a separate decorative element. Olive trees, low planting and carefully positioned vegetation soften the mineral character of the building and reinforce the relationship between the villa and its outdoor spaces.

VILLA ATLAS reflects ATELIER MZ’s approach to contemporary residential architecture in Casablanca, where site, materiality, natural light, landscape and spatial sequence are conceived as parts of a unified architectural composition.

The project demonstrates how a restrained combination of raw concrete, warm mineral surfaces, timber and vegetation can create a contemporary villa with a strong sense of place and material identity.
