The Fredericksburg Veterans Affairs Outpatient Center sets a new standard for veteran-centered healthcare, blending design innovation with regional character, flexibility, and a deep focus on wellness. As the largest privately-owned VA medical center in the U.S., the 471,121 SF facility sits on a thoughtfully designed 48-acre site along I-95. Inspired by Fredericksburg’s historic charm, the center adopts a “clinical village” model—a series of interconnected buildings that reduce institutional scale and foster comfort, familiarity, and community. Four distinct healing gardens and a memorial create moments for reflection, connection, and sensory engagement throughout the campus.
The design prioritizes Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), integrating abundant natural light, acoustic balance, thermal comfort, and superior air quality through MERV 14 filtration, low-VOC finishes, and mold-resistant materials. Sustainability is woven into every detail—from high-performance HVAC systems and envelope design to water-saving strategies and significant construction waste diversion—earning the project two Green Globes for environmental performance. Modular planning ensures long-term flexibility, allowing clinical spaces to adapt over time with minimal disruption. Universal access principles guide circulation, wayfinding, and service line organization, reducing anxiety and enhancing usability for all.
More than just a medical facility, the Fredericksburg VA Outpatient Center is a resilient, holistic environment that honors those who serve. It embodies a forward-thinking approach to care—one rooted in dignity, wellness, and the ability to evolve alongside its community.
