Venice Biennale 2012 – Part

Part is a work by architect Petra Gipp and composer Kim Hedås. The work constitutes part of an artistic investigation that intends to explore how dimensions of architecture/art and music/sound may be widened as more layers are added to the totality. In Part, sound and structure interact to create new sequences that together build a polyphonically shifting play. The sound is integrated with the cast – concrete, wax and bronze – and is filtered through the parchment membrane. The architecture is defined through the space. Part inquires whether these layers can enhance the understanding of an architectural work and musical work respectively, whether their reciprocity can reinforce each individual piece.
Part is a structure consisting of eleven cubes cast in concrete, wax and bronze with membranes out of parchment. The music is composed with surround sound that is played trough seven loudspeakers, five cast into the structure and two placed in the space. The structure is mounted in a grid of thin tubes, from floor to ceiling, which is part of the idea of a three dimensional score. Complementing the work is a scheme that explicates the process through cuts/plans/view, musical instructions and texts.
