Following a strong start to the design of the USO Family Center at Bethesda, STUDIOS was selected by the USO (United Service Organizations) to design another, similar building at Fort Belvoir.
The Belvoir USO Family Center provides amenities, services and administrative support to wounded warriors, their next of kin and extended family members. Program functions for the USO Family Center include reception, gathering and multipurpose spaces, kitchen facilities, amenities such as gamerooms and lounges, and administrative office space for on-site support personnel.
Based on the approved project program and vision, STUDIOS prepared schematic design concepts illustrating the major program components in the context of the site. Given the sensitive nature of the project, and its location on the historic campus, STUDIOS coordinated the design with the State Historic Preservation Officer, as well as the Fort Belvoir installation design guidelines and AT/FP criteria.
The design goals of the project focused on the Wounded Warrior and Family Experience. The design speaks to a “Sense of Home” for its occupants while maintaining a connection to nature. With warriors from all over the country utilizing the facility, STUDIOS designed the project for universal appeal. Key to the facility are spaces for the soldiers to “opt out” of activities and spend time alone. Spaces for respite include arts and education spaces, quiet rooms and the outdoor “healing garden.”
The project was funded entirely by private donations.
