Nechako Commons is the first mixed-use residence to be constructed on UBC’s Okanagan campus, providing 220 beds primarily to first-year students, a 500-seat dining hall, and housing amenities that serve the entire campus residence community. The project represents a critical step in long-term housing plans for UBC, which is one of North America’s largest student housing providers, operating over 16,000 beds across its two campuses.
Designed as an efficient four-storey residential bar atop two-level public base, the building thoughtfully integrates living, learning, and social spaces, while framing new campus connections and outdoor gathering spaces. The core design driver was to foster student success and wellbeing by shaping a true living-learning community.
The podium accommodates shared amenities and “commons” programs, including a front desk and residence support services, multiple study and lounge areas, two food service outlets, a multi-purpose ballroom, fitness and music practice rooms, a games lounge, food retail, and administrative offices for all campus housing staff.
The residential bar offers efficient yet comfortable beds in semi-suite configurations with shared washrooms, including six accessible single-room suites. Social spaces are prominently located along shared vertical circulation routes, uniting the building as a cohesive whole and encouraging student interaction and wellness.
