Located in New York, USA, UC House was conceived to address the challenge of adapting Jacobsen’s design language to North American climatic, construction, and cultural conditions. Situated in a low-density, tree-lined residential neighborhood, the project sought to establish a balanced relationship with its surroundings by combining structural lightness, natural light, privacy, and indoor-outdoor integration.
The residence is organized into two independent volumes, positioned on the site to balance their presence in the landscape while respecting the scale of neighboring structures. Sited slightly above street level, the volumes are internally connected by a foyer that creates a transition between the two buildings.
Dividing the house into two blocks also allowed the program to be organized according to different uses. One volume houses the more formal areas. On the ground floor, a spacious living room with a soaring ceiling connects vertically to the master suite on the floor above. A large bookcase, a meeting table, and a bar define the space, complemented by a carefully curated selection of finishes, furnishings, and lighting.
The second volume contains the spaces dedicated to the family's daily life. The upper floor holds six family suites and two guest bedrooms with independent access. On the ground floor, a more informal living area, anchored by a large L-shaped sofa, flows into the dining room, gourmet kitchen, and covered veranda. This volume also accommodates a reading room and a small office, as well as areas for leisure and sports, including a basketball court, a patio, a gym, and a deck.
Technical and service areas are concentrated on the lower level, allowing the other floors to be dedicated entirely to family life and entertaining. The organization of the building volumes and the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces were developed with Long Island’s specific climatic conditions in mind, aiming for comfort during cold, damp winters and hot, humid summers without sacrificing transparency or integration with the existing trees.
