In the heart of Charlotte’s Center City, the Truist Center Plaza and Lobby Renovation redefines the role of corporate space within the urban fabric. Originally envisioned as a maintenance upgrade, the project evolved into a transformative endeavor that aligns with Charlotte’s 2040 Vision Plan and Truist’s mission to build better lives and communities. What was once a transitional, underutilized space is now a vibrant civic landmark that welcomes public life, encourages community engagement, and supports a more inclusive, connected urban environment.
The redesigned plaza invites visitors in with open sightlines, lush native landscaping, and a re-established tree canopy that promotes biodiversity and thermal comfort. Flexible furnishings and integrated event infrastructure accommodate daily use and large-scale public programming, allowing the space to serve as an extension of the surrounding area. This reimagined public realm enhances pedestrian flow and encourages lingering, interaction, and shared experiences.
Inside, the lobby is designed to prioritize wellness, inclusivity, and adaptability.
Natural materials, biophilic textures, and curated art create a warm, approachable atmosphere. Layered lighting and strategically placed furnishings allow for a range of activities—from informal meetings to community-focused gatherings—while seamless security features ensure a safe and welcoming experience for all. The design integrates technology and intuitive wayfinding to support both day-to-day functionality and special event use.
A key element of the project is its celebration of local culture and diversity. Community-engaged art installations—highlighted by the “Threshold” sculpture by Bryony Roberts—elevate the space’s cultural relevance and ensure representation through design. These artworks, created by underrepresented artists, help tell the story of Charlotte and reinforce Truist’s values of equity, connection, and civic pride.
This project exemplifies purpose-driven placemaking – balancing infrastructure and aesthetics, function and meaning. Through thoughtful design, collaborative planning, and a commitment to community-first outcomes, the Truist Center Plaza and Lobby have been transformed into a true urban gathering place: one that not only reflects Charlotte’s evolving identity but also empowers it.
