For ages, communities have thrived through multi-generational living. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was common and honored tradition to live with one’s grandparents and elders. However, the postwar period witnessed a surge in residential development and a shift towards automobile-centric urban planning, leading to a decline in intergenerational living arrangements. This unintended consequence of post-war prosperity has resulted in the loss of the invaluable advantages associated with cohabitating with diverse age groups. Recognizing this, three organizations are now exploring the merits of intergenerational housing at a new facility called Trinity Woods in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Situated at the core of Mount Mary University’s campus, this distinctive living environment is a collaborative effort between The School Sisters of Notre Dame, Mount Mary University, and Milwaukee Catholic Home. Intergenerational housing fosters a diverse community, uniting individuals from various backgrounds and age groups under a single roof. At Trinity Woods, seniors, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, students who are single mothers, and their children coexist within the same building.
The project originated from The School Sisters of Notre Dame's necessity for a modernized residence to replace their aging convent with a facility aligned with their mission and means. This prompted discussions with Milwaukee Catholic Home to explore possibilities for accommodating the declining Sister population and repurposing unused units for seniors. Mount Mary University was selected as the site for Trinity Woods due to the sisters' ownership of the land where the facility now stands. Collaborating closely, the three organizations, along with Plunkett Raysich Architects, LLP, refined the project's vision and oversaw the construction of the 258,366 sq. ft. facility, which welcomed its first occupants in February 2022.
With the project started in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly influenced the collaboration between the design team and clients. Together they adeptly maneuvered through remote work to reconcile diverse perspectives and reach consensus. The resulting architectural design is distinct, deliberately fostering spontaneous interactions among the sisters, seniors, single mother students, and children, nurturing a robust, compassionate, and secure community environment.
Trinity Woods presents distinctive advantages and opportunities for all involved institutions, residents, and the wider community. These range from cost savings and mentorship opportunities to educational and employment prospects for students, fostering faith, community building, and supporting those in need. This innovative campus initiative has demonstrated its ability to generate various synergies, underscoring the manifold benefits of intergenerational housing.
