Oneworks is leading the design of the Porto Vecchio redevelopment and urban regeneration project on the Trieste coastline, a project that is a key development in reconnecting the port to the city, and a significant example of maritime industrial archaeology in the Mediterranean.
This ambitious initiative aims to create a thriving new neighbourhood by thoughtfully integrating diverse public and private spaces, including residential, commercial, and recreational areas. By strengthening the community’s connection to the sea through improved access and amenities and preserving the area’s unique character through thoughtful design and planning, the project will enhance Trieste’s urban landscape.
The ancient port of Trieste, known as the Porto Vecchio, is an area covering over 66 hectares located just a stone’s throw from the city center and is an important example of maritime industrial archaeology. It overlooks the sea from the end of the Ponterosso Canal, close to the city center, and consists of a series of large buildings originally used as warehouses for goods in transit during the Free Port of Trieste era.
The area will incorporate approximately 300 student units, 200 to 300 multi-family residences and 50 service flats for the elderly. There will be two hotels with 200 rooms, 1,400 parking spaces, a 500-berth marina with a 5,000 sqm beach, while a 4,500 sqm wellness center, a 5,000 sqm sports and entertainment area, together with a 3,000 sqm sailing/boating center is also planned.
Cycle paths will stretch for almost 2 km with bicycle amenities for 200 bikes. A total of 680 trees will be planted along the 3-kilometre stretch of the area under development.
