Oneworks presents the new masterplan for the Piazzale Lugano area, a major urban regeneration project in north-west Milan. Transforming a 22,000-square-metre former postal sorting centre, the design reclaims a previously derelict site to create an open, accessible, and deeply integrated urban space.
As part of a wider transformation process that includes the adjacent Scalo Farini site, the project acts as a vital new northern gateway to the to the planned railway park. This strategic position strengthens both physical and social links between the Bovisa and Ghisolfa districts, helping to seamlessly stitch these historically fragmented neighbourhoods back together.
The masterplan introduces two new buildings conceived as an integrated system: an office building (10,500 sqm GFA) featuring a 1,000 sqm commercial podium, and a second building (11,500 sqm GFA) dedicated to tertiary and hospitality functions. Designed to interact smoothly with their surroundings, the architecture is embedded within a network of open spaces featuring soft, fluid geometries. Beyond the buildings themselves, the project prioritises the public realm, dedicating over 13,000 square metres to plazas, pedestrian routes, and new meeting places carefully arranged to enhance the quality of daily urban life.
Green infrastructure is a central pillar of the design, with over 9,000 square metres devoted specifically to green spaces and pedestrian-priority zones. By redeveloping and expanding the existing gardens at Piazzale Lugano, the Oneworks project ensures a continuous, accessible green corridor that will flow naturally into the future parklands.
To support the area’s renewed central role, the project reorganises the local road network and introduces dedicated cycle and pedestrian links, particularly along the southern edge. By improving connections north and south of the Bacula flyover, the masterplan anticipates future municipal developments and provides a highly liveable, well-connected environment.
Ultimately, the regeneration of Piazzale Lugano restores a historically overlooked area to a central role in Milan’s future. It delivers a highly liveable, beautifully green, and seamlessly connected district, perfectly positioned to support the major transformations shaping the city’s next chapter.
