The idea of concept design is to create original, memorable image that would be appropriate for the City of Ryde, Sydney and Australia in general. It would have attracted tourists from around the world.
The history of the Australia continent was researched and the main goal of tourism was analyzed to select the architectural image and found out that Australia attracts many tourists by its unique nature. In particular, inhabited by the largest number of poisonous snakes with a variety of colors, and in our view is very beautiful. That is why the cobra was chosen as the image for future building.
The flexible form of snake can accommodate all the areas that are provided in the brief and create inner open space / public plaza for use by the community in the center of the site, and the building in this case serves as protection from noise, dust and other negative factors. In the "head" of the "cobra" was offered to place a restaurant with panoramic views to the bay and mountains. The restaurant is provided a separate entrance. Below the "head" was designed the area for civil and administrative functions of the City of Ryde with total area 6000 sqm. The main entrance to this part is carried from the public plaza.
In the next part of "snake" building are designed a multi-functional indoor space for use and benefit of public and private organizations that include theater for 600 spectators and ballroom. Entrance to the multi-functional indoor space is also carried from the public plaza, for theater staff are provided a separate entrance and a group of rooms for them, including: wardrobe, workshop, dressing and green rooms etc. For dancers and other athletes who will train and perform in the ballroom are provided their own entrance with dressing and shower rooms, w/c, coaching rooms and etc.
Residential apartments (including "key worker" housing) are situated on the 3d, 4th and 5th floors. There are two entrances to the apartments near "the tail of the snake" from the Blaxland Road street which will be deadlock and forms a closed residential area according to the development plan. The building with 5 storeys height was chosen for harmonious combination with the existing cottage development on the Blaxland Road. At the "tail of the snake" is provided a playground.
At the 1st and 2d floors under residential storeys were proposed to accommodate rooms for commercial activities to support the viability of the civic precinct with access to the main street - Devlin Street.
Urban conditions that were consisted on this site cut pedestrian connectivity with the surrounding area, made it impossible to create a stop for public transport on the Devlin Street from the side of the design area, that's why we proposed to change a transportation hub that made it possible to design bus stop. Also the offered node allows to avoid traffic lights on Devlin Street - Blaxland Road and to arrange adjustable pedestrian crossing.
For better connection with the Ryde City Center was designed track cycling, which is a continuation of an existing bike route in the City of Ryde. At the intersection of Park Street - Blaxland Road, instead of the ground parking was proposed to add one more entrance/exit from the underground car park and designed park of water and kinetic sculptures that will become a place of recreation for employees of Ryde City Center and residents of the surrounding area.
