Namcheon Elementary school, which opened in 1984, has changed its interior by partially improving space through large and small remodeling. The project is remodeled at the teachers’ office, restaurants, and conference room. The existing space was in urgent need to basic environmental improvement due to the exposure of temporary walls with sandwich panels, unpainted walls and electrical wires. The teacher’s office was considered to be the main workspace for teachers and a place where they could communicate with students so that teachers could concentrate on their work and students could meet their teachers comfortably.
While students wanted a comfortable teacher’s office to go in and out of, the teacher had to come up with a compromise because there was an opinion that the office, which is a workspace, was burdensome to open. In the hallway, it is visually partially opened and designed for students to enter and exit the front space outside the teacher’s office. Specific space improvement directions were set so that students could use the existing restaurant space as a resting and reading space other than lunchtime.
Program setting in three-space.
Visually and spatially open, it is difficult to actually become an open space without a program to be used by users. To This problem, the teacher’s office has set up three program areas: a workspace where students can focus on their work, a meeting space where student’s parents and teachers can meet, and a book café where students and teachers can eat and read.
1. Visually opening
When looking at the teachers’ room in the hallway or playground, it was constructed to look through windows in various locations, not through uniform windows. Through carious-shaped windows, the teacher’s office was induced to appear as a soft and open image, not a uniform and hard place.
2. Connection with outside
It was intended to connect the space for reading books with the playground in the teachers’ office and to actively bring in students’ movements and make it an open teachers’ office other than the workspace. However, the construction process failed due to opposition from the school.
