Nestled in the valleys of Mingling Mountains near Yixing, China’s "Pottery Capital", the Earth Valley Theater is a pioneering 9,200 sqm open-air venue dedicated to human-avian interaction. Designed as an integrated "total work of art" (Gesamtkunstwerk), the project transcends traditional boundaries between architecture and landscape, functioning as a piece of land art that facilitates interspecies cohabitation.
The spatial experience begins at the northern entrance, where three cuboid halls—translated into the local "clay" motif—structure the arrival. From here, the design leverages natural topography to create three distinct roaming paths descending into the valley. These paths utilize undulating landforms to naturally bifurcate spectator circulation from the protected aviary zones, ensuring a safe yet immersive transition from the built environment to the wild. By meticulously calibrating flight paths and seating slopes, the strategic "sinking" of the 2,300-seat amphitheater into the T-shaped valley minimizes environmental intervention while allowing birds to fly autonomously, sweeping over spectators in a visceral encounter. This resulted from a highly integrated design process, where architectural logic developed in parallel with artistic direction and avian behavioral consultancy to ensure seamless synergy between space and performance.
The project’s materiality reinforces its regional identity through high-tech translations of traditional industries. The public "Plinth" and performance areas utilizes CNC-shaped, hand-sculpted concrete to replicate the tactile texture of raw pottery, while the aviary zone employs a weather-resistant, low-carbon light steel system wrapped in HDPE to simulate woven bamboo.
Sustainability is embedded in the project’s DNA. The design achieves earthwork balance, utilizes terraced green roofs for thermal insulation, and integrates existing flood channels into a landscape water recycling system for irrigation. By aligning architectural logic with avian behavior and environmental stewardship, the Earth Valley Theater creates a transformative "dreamscape" where humanity and nature reconnect, offering a profound spatial dialogue between species and their shared earth.
