Located at the heart of Wuhan’s historic commercial vein, the Urban Renewal of Xin'an Jiuru Area in Hanzheng Street revitalizes a district that has served as the city’s "mercantile soul" since the Ming and Qing dynasties. This masterplan addresses the complexities of a dense urban fabric characterized by a multi-layered architectural heritage—ranging from ancient timber structures and traditional Lifeny housing to industrial plants and contemporary residences. Faced with the challenges of fragmented public spaces, stagnant industrial growth, and severed connectivity, the project proposes a transformative framework titled "Inspiration Loop Linking Five Quarters".
The design strategy centers on a four-dimensional restructuring of traffic, texture, style, and operation. By surgically adjusting the road network and employing building relocation, the plan restores urban permeability while preserving the historic "fishbone" alleyway pattern. A pioneering "Inspiration Loop" serves as a modern circulation spine, threading through 22 building clusters to integrate high-tech infrastructure, such as smart logistics and data conduits, beneath the historic grain.
Under the philosophy of "Time Weaving," the plan retains continuous roofscapes while utilizing stilt floors to create a porous, multi-level pedestrian network. Social equity is prioritized through a decentralized renewal model, allowing residents to retain space rights through a "nomadic" operational approach. Three landmark anchors—Yaowang Square, Jiuru Square, and the "Heart of Hanzheng"—are established to facilitate traditional memory, creative incubation, and international fashion exhibitions respectively. By anchoring creative industries within a localized context, the project transcends physical renovation to build a "Growing Inspiration District," ensuring Hanzheng Street evolves into a global digital fashion landmark while remaining an authentic carrier of Wuhan’s urban spirit.
