The ‘Cube’ is a 10’x10’x10’ mirrored object that was conceived to be a provocative and seductive Folly in the landscape, and also as a rarefied destination for ideation and escape. It is placed on a 25-foot by 25-foot plateau at the highest level of a residential garden. It was commissioned with the client’s home, which was designed and built simultaneously.
With Its rotation of ten degrees from the orthogonal site, it has its own autonomy. From any viewpoint, it essentially photographs its context of sky, landscape, or city views beyond. As one ascends towards it, the photograph becomes images of dynamic change - a movie. Once there, you see yourself or can revolve around to see the house below and the spectacular city views beyond.
The back side of the cube has a portal where you leave the familiar behind. As you cross the threshold and descend one step it transforms into a cylindrical space with an oculus to the sky. It’s a mini-pantheon with a connection to the sky. For a group, it’s an introverted shared experience; for a person alone, its meditative and contemplative.
The seating is integrally heated cast concrete, the walls are polished white marker board paint, and the ceiling is felt. The structure of the cube is reinforced fiberglass that was made in five pieces and craned into place, then clad with the exterior and interior finishes.
