**The Church of Grace Chapel** is a small place of worship built within a natural setting that is primarily used by students for retreats during school vacations. During peak seasons, as many as 500 people may gather, but on a regular day, the space is often empty.
The client’s requirements were minimal:
1. A small, warm space capable of accommodating 30 to 50 people for worship.
2. A sacred and intimate environment where individuals or groups of up to 30 can always focus quietly on prayer.
3. An object-like chapel set within a wide lawn.
### Design Concept
The design concept is simple. Before entering the chapel, there is a transitional space intended to build anticipation and tension for those approaching. When the door is opened and one enters the chapel, the design aims to provide a sense of reverence and spiritual awe through a contrasting effect.
To create this experience, one side of the corridor leading to the chapel features a brick wall constructed in a semi-open pattern. This design allows the space to interact with the surrounding nature, letting light and breeze filter through, while also creating a tactile connection with the environment. At the end of the corridor, a skylight was installed, using natural light to increase the sense of expectation as one enters the chapel.
### The Chapel's Curved Design
The chapel is designed with three key curved elements:
1. The first curved wall surrounds the lawn, designed as an outdoor worship space for when many students gather.
2. The second curved wall marks the entrance, naturally welcoming people and emphasizing the entrance experience.
3. The third element is the ceiling that rises high towards the sky, instilling a sense of reverence and solemnity in those who enter, while the light streaming through the skylight directs focus towards the altar.
Long windows are installed along the lower part of the walls, allowing views of the outside lawn from the seated area. These windows do not distract those praying but draw the expansive greenery of the lawn into the interior of the chapel, bringing nature inside.
### Material and Finishes
The interior materials are kept minimal to maintain the pure and sacred atmosphere. Exposed concrete finishes are used throughout the chapel, adding to the simplicity and reverence of the space. The heavy sound that reverberates off the concrete helps deepen the focus during prayer.
For the exterior, warm red clay bricks were chosen, emphasizing the tactile experience of the material as each brick is carefully laid. The natural curve of the brick wall enhances the organic and inviting feel of the chapel, making it an integral part of the surrounding landscape.
This design of the chapel not only serves as a space for worship but also as a place where the boundaries between the natural world and the sacred space blur, creating a profound spiritual experience for all who enter.
