Set along the Lake Washington shoreline, this project transformed an existing single-family home through a comprehensive remodel and carefully integrated addition. The design solution gracefully resolved the fragmented conditions of several prior additions to the circa 1928 cabin – strengthening its connection to the landscape while honoring its original character.
A new entry sequence establishes a clear sense of arrival – and locates the front door where it should have been all along. Cast-in-place concrete terraces and stairs are layered into the sloping site, guiding visitors from the street to an entry canopy and front door.
Inside, the renovation centers on light, openness, and access to enviable views of Lake Washington. Existing wood ceiling and heavy timber structures are retained and celebrated, providing a strong architectural rhythm throughout the primary living spaces. These elements are paired with a restrained palette of natural materials – wood, stone, and plaster – to create a calm and cohesive interior environment.
Main living areas are organized to emphasize connection and flow. A low, integrated mahogany wine cabinet defines zones within the open plan without interrupting views to the lake. Large windows and sliding doors frame seasonal changes, drawing afternoon sun deep into the home and reinforcing a constant visual relationship to the water and surrounding landscape.
Private spaces are similarly refined. Bathrooms are conceived as quiet, light-filled retreats, with simple forms, floating vanities, and carefully detailed tile surfaces. Bedrooms incorporate built-in elements, including window seats that create intimate moments oriented toward views and natural light.
The addition extends the home’s footprint while maintaining a consistent architectural language. Exterior materials – wood siding, brick, and concrete – are composed to relate to the existing structure, ensuring the new work feels integrated rather than appended. Clean detailing and horizontal lines reinforce the home’s connection to its site and mid-century origins.
Throughout, the project prioritizes clarity, restraint, and craft. The result is a cohesive transformation that balances warmth and modernity, creating a home that is both deeply livable and closely attuned to its waterfront setting – and one that appears to have been there all along.
