Upward designed this metal arts workshop for a private fabricator on a wooded site near Maple Valley, Washington. Conceived as both a fabrication facility and prototyping environment, the building celebrates the act of making and the client’s direct role in constructing the project.
The approximately 4,800 SF facility is organized around a high-bay metal fabrication shop that accommodates welding, cutting, grinding, and material staging. The main shop space features tall clear heights, oversized equipment doors for material delivery and finished work, and an exposed structural layout that prioritizes flexibility, efficiency, and ease of modification over time.
Architecturally, the building is a simple rectilinear form clad in durable dark metal siding, selected for longevity and compatibility with the site’s forested setting. The restrained exterior allows the building to recede into its environment while expressing its industrial purpose. A prominent glazed volume marks the entry and introduces transparency into the otherwise solid envelope, offering a glimpse into the work within and reinforcing the identity of the shop as a place of craft and production.
Designed with constructability in mind, the project reflects close coordination between designer and owner-builder. Material choices, structural systems, and detailing were intentionally straightforward and robust, allowing the client to self-perform construction while maintaining a high level of architectural clarity.
