Rankin Inlet Healing Facility

Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) Critical Care Tower [second largest emergency department in Canada]

The project, which is a Joint Venture between Parkin and CEI Architecture, adds 151 acute care beds and a new emergency department with specialized mental health and pediatric care.

Delivered by a public-private partnership, with emphasis on evidence-based and Lean design principles, the facility is set to support the highest standard of care, placing patient and family care at its core while also stressing staff safety.

All patients have access to natural light and a dedicated family space.

Infection control, universal design and disaster preparedness are also key priorities for the project.

Other elements include:

• Adult Intensive Care Unit
• Neonatal Centre of Excellence
• Additional space for clinical academic campus of UBC School of Medicine
• Laboratory with latest medical technology, specifically designed for the region

The new emergency and pediatric emergency department will open October 1st, 2013, and the rest of the tower is set to open in June, 2014.
