From Industrial Relic to Cultural Landmark

StorySpace transforms a desolate industrial cooling tower in Tangshan, China, into an immersive micro-museum and cultural landmark. Located between the Douhe River and the city center, the project responds to Tangshan’s layered identity: its industrial heritage, ceramic culture, and ongoing transformation into a city shaped by public life, memory, and cultural tourism.
The project works with the tower’s existing presence rather than replacing it. Its brick-and-mortar cylinder, rising above a concrete dodecagon base, remains legible as a powerful industrial form. Inside, the hollow structure is reactivated as a vertical journey from darkness to light — a “lighthouse of stories” where industrial heritage, civic memory, and imagination meet.
A Vertical Scroll of Light and Memory

At the heart of the project is a lightweight helix ramp inspired by ancient scrolls, paper-cutting, and the layered silhouette of Chinese pagodas. The ramp rises through the tower like an unfolded sheet, shaping a luminous inner void and turning circulation into exhibition.
Digital displays wrap around the helical path, transforming the interior surface into a contemporary scroll painting. Visitors do not simply look at the exhibition; they activate it. Stories brighten, fade, and shift according to movement and presence, allowing each person to leave a temporary trace within the space.
Natural daylight is reflected down through the tower by a convex mirror ceiling. At the base, a mirror pool extends the effect, creating an infinite reflection of light and shadow. The result is a dreamlike vertical museum experience — part gallery, part theatre, part living archive.
An Immersive Museum of Shared Stories

StorySpace is conceived as a museum of stories. Ancient fables, local histories, heroic journeys, and contemporary narratives unfold through sound, light, image, scent, and interaction.
A complete story cannot be understood from one fixed point. It emerges through movement, encounter, and participation. The longer visitors remain in the space, the more the digital scroll responds; when they leave, their presence fades slowly into the memory of the tower. Each visit becomes part of a larger collective narrative.
A Material Language Forged from Flaws

Tangshan is known as China’s Northern Porcelain Capital, and StorySpace turns this ceramic identity into an architectural language. Recycled vitrified porcelain and ceramic waste are reimagined through 3D printing and traditional glazing techniques, creating tactile, luminous surfaces for the interior helix.
The material strategy draws on the idea of repair. Flawed and discarded fragments are not hidden; they are transformed into atmosphere, surface, and story. Industrial waste becomes a spatial experience, giving the museum its emotional and material depth.
The exterior is conceived as a new protective coat that preserves the tower’s monolithic character while giving it a renewed public identity. By day, the tower keeps the quiet strength of an industrial relic. By night, it becomes a glowing landmark along the river, guiding visitors toward culture, memory, and imagination.
A Multi-Sensory Portal for the City

StorySpace extends the museum experience into Tangshan itself. Embedded digital systems can connect visitors to cultural events, augmented-reality experiences, children’s educational games, and nature routes around the city.
The tower becomes a place to begin exploring Tangshan: its ceramic heritage, river landscape, industrial memory, and contemporary public life. It works as both a destination and a portal, linking the city’s past and future through stories that can grow with every visit.
Environmental and Social Impact

StorySpace links cultural reuse with measurable environmental value. By keeping the existing cooling tower in use and working with recycled ceramic waste, the project reduces the demand for new construction materials and gives Tangshan’s industrial residue a second life. The strategy avoids an estimated 570 metric tons of CO₂ emissions, comparable to the carbon absorbed by approximately 44,000 tree seedlings grown over ten years.
Its social impact begins with access. The tower becomes a safe, welcoming public interior where families, children, residents, and visitors can gather around stories rather than objects alone. Ancient fables, local histories, digital narratives, and visitor-generated traces create an informal learning environment connected to Tangshan’s ceramic traditions and industrial memory.
The project contributes to SDG 3 by supporting well-being through shared cultural experience, SDG 4 through informal education, SDG 8 through cultural tourism and local craft economies, SDG 9 through adaptive reuse and digital fabrication, SDG 11 through the revitalization of urban heritage, SDG 12 through circular material practice, SDG 13 through reduced embodied carbon, and SDG 16 through collective memory and civic participation.
Here, sustainability becomes part of the museum experience: a story about how a city can repair, reuse, and reimagine what it already has.
