A Library as Urban Connector

INTER-VOID: Mosaic of Knowledge is a public library designed for Seodaemun, one of Seoul’s dense and evolving urban districts. Set beside a central neighborhood park and surrounded by residential towers, schools, pedestrian routes, and everyday public life, the project imagines the library as more than a building for books. It becomes a civic connector: a place where knowledge, landscape, community, and urban movement overlap.
The project responds to Seodaemun’s mosaic-like urban fabric. Low-rise fragments, high-rise residential blocks, park edges, school routes, markets, and transit connections form a dense pattern of daily life. INTER-VOID translates this condition into architecture, creating a layered public building that gathers the district’s different scales into one shared civic interior.
The Central Void of Knowledge

At the heart of the project is a large inter-void: a spatial core that acts as a funnel for light, movement, and knowledge. Rather than treating the library as a closed container, the design opens it from within. Bookshelves, reading areas, stairs, terraces, and communal spaces are organized around this central void, allowing visitors to see across levels and feel the library as one continuous field.
The void brings natural light deep into the building and creates visual connections between the park, the city, and the interior life of the library. It turns reading into a spatial experience. Knowledge is no longer stored in silent rooms alone; it circulates through a civic landscape of platforms, openings, views, and encounters.
A Mosaic Between Old and New Seoul

The architecture works between two urban conditions: the fine-grained diversity of Seodaemun’s existing fabric and the vertical scale of recent redevelopment. Its stacked volumes recall a mosaic, or a set of interlocking pieces, negotiating between the human scale of the park and the larger scale of the surrounding residential towers.
This layered massing allows the library to avoid becoming a single monumental block. Instead, it behaves like a small city: open at the ground, active in the middle, quiet in the reading zones, and green across its terraces. The building becomes a bridge between the historical texture of the district and the new vertical identity of Seoul.
Park, Library, and Public Ground

Located along the edge of the neighborhood park, INTER-VOID extends the park into the building. The ground floor remains open and accessible, inviting people to pass through, gather, rest, attend events, or simply use the library as part of their daily route.
The project strengthens existing pedestrian connections toward Gajwa Station, Molaenae Market, nearby schools, the Gyeongui Line, and the wider park network. In this way, the library is not only a destination. It also becomes a shortcut, a threshold, and a pause within the neighborhood’s everyday movement.
The public square and open terraces support workshops, readings, informal meetings, children’s activities, and community events. INTER-VOID treats the library as a social condenser: a place where individual study and collective life can happen side by side.
A Wooden Core for Reading and Gathering

The interior is shaped around a warm wooden core. This element gives the library its structural clarity and emotional character. Against the translucent outer envelope, the wooden reading spaces create a calm, tactile atmosphere — a place where visitors can slow down, focus, and feel protected without being isolated from the city.
Large reading rooms, stepped platforms, open stacks, lounges, and terraces form a continuous route through the building. The experience shifts from active public ground to quieter upper levels, allowing the library to support different rhythms of use: study, research, play, conversation, performance, and retreat.
A Porous Environmental Envelope

INTER-VOID uses a translucent double-skin facade to moderate light, heat, and visibility. The outer layer gives the building a soft civic presence during the day, while at night the library glows gently through the park, revealing the life of reading and gathering inside.
The facade supports passive environmental strategies, including daylight control, shading, and natural ventilation. Rooftop and facade-integrated solar panels contribute to renewable energy production, while permeable ground surfaces and stormwater collection help the building work with the park’s ecological systems.
The project’s environmental strategy is not hidden as technical infrastructure. It becomes part of the library’s public identity: a building that teaches through its own operation.
Environmental and Social Impact

INTER-VOID contributes to SDG 4 by expanding access to knowledge, learning, culture, and lifelong education. Its open reading rooms, community spaces, children’s areas, workshops, and public programs turn the library into an inclusive educational landscape for all ages.
The project supports SDG 11 by strengthening the role of the library as civic infrastructure. It improves access to safe, inclusive, green, and cultural public space within a dense residential district, while reinforcing pedestrian connectivity across Seodaemun’s park and neighborhood network.
Through its wooden core, double-skin envelope, solar energy systems, stormwater collection, permeable surfaces, and green terraces, INTER-VOID also contributes to SDG 7, SDG 12, and SDG 13. It reduces environmental load, promotes responsible resource use, and offers a model for climate-conscious public architecture.
The library also supports SDG 3 by creating a calm, green, and socially connected environment for well-being. Reading, gathering, resting, learning, and walking through the park become part of one continuous civic experience.
