Pfeiffer Partners designed the new Performing Arts Building at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Potsdam, the first new academic building constructed on campus since 1973. It accommodates the academic and performance needs of theater and dance, bringing both disciplines together in an integrated, highly activated facility designed for LEED Silver certification. The building includes a 350-seat proscenium theater, purposely designed to accommodate both theatrical and dance performances, a 100-seat black box theater, a 4,000 sf dance performance space with an aerial grid, two large movement studios, faculty offices, student organization space, dressing rooms, a green room, a scene shop, a costume shop and associated storage, a gracious lobby, a café, a digital audio and recording studio and performer support spaces. Classrooms include education, drafting, CAD and lighting labs, and teacher training labs are also provided. The design of the building takes its inspiration from the geologic formations of the nearby Adirondacks.
