ST. STEPHEN’S CALLS ON PERKINS+WILL MIAMI TO DESIGN THEIR NEW ARTS & INNOVATION CENTER
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School sought out the Miami studio of Perkins+Will, renowned architects for the world’s best education design, who happened to be in their backyard.
The highly recognized and prestigious architecture firm, who are known for educational design from Saudi Arabia to Latin America, designed the new Arts & Innovation Center, located at the entrance of the historic St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School in Coconut Grove.
Understanding the principles of STEAM education, St. Stephen’s envisioned a 20,000-square-foot center that allows for a multidisciplinary approach to education for both faculty and students. The Miami office of Perkins+Will is making these visions a reality.
In doing so, the facility will be one of the leading examples of STEAM education in early childhood development and will showcase principles of flexibility and adaptability, multidisciplinary education, team-based learning and technology-enabled, project-based outcomes.
Perkins+Will Miami’s design embodies the latest in educational facilities, recognizing that next-generation education requires new kinds of buildings and learning environments. Careful attention has been given to creating spaces that provide learning experiences in all aspects of the design.
From the design of its systems to environmentally responsible strategies including careful calibration of daylighting, acoustics, and technology, the building creates formal and informal learning environments that foster transparency, mobility and wellbeing.
Construction is set for completion in 2020.
