The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra expansion is a comprehensive renovation and approximately 64,000–65,000-square-foot expansion of Powell Hall, the orchestra’s historic performance venue in St. Louis, Missouri, designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with Christner Architects and other consultants. The project updates and expands the performance hall, public spaces, backstage facilities, and educational areas to enhance accessibility, functionality, and community engagement while preserving the building’s historic character.
Powell Hall, originally built in 1925 and adapted as the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s home in 1968, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The expansion includes a new, welcoming lobby and entry sequence, expanded backstage and rehearsal spaces, educational and learning facilities, and a renewed public plaza at Grand Boulevard and Samuel Shepard Drive.
Major features include a suite of gathering areas within a triple-height public interior, improved circulation, universal accessibility, and modernized support spaces for performers and staff. The new public plaza and landscape design extend the building’s civic presence into the surrounding urban fabric.
The project supports the Symphony’s mission by enhancing audience experience, expanding opportunities for music education and community outreach, and strengthening the venue’s role within St. Louis’s cultural district. It harmonizes historic preservation with contemporary design and community connectivity.
