The St Albans Residence was commissioned as a rural weekend home, and designed as a simple open-plan pavilion. Combining traditional rural materials in a sophisticated, contemporary and sustainable manner, the clients’ requirements for privacy and extra room for guests are met by an inspired use of joinery and loft spaces.
At once lightweight and robust, the pavilion opens up like a tent to allow for natural ventilation and light, while the wood stack, pond enclosed courtyard and the sandstone fireplace of the original dwelling keep it firmly grounded within the site.
