This retreat fosters self-discovery through its many protective layers that invoke a sense of privacy and by letting the inhabited space dissolve away, leaving the inhabitant and nature to become reacquainted. Located on ten acres of hillside, this private refuge is partially hidden amid a grove of trees. Curved earthen walls gently carve into the landscape to create the entry to the space below. Topography, orientation, and landscape heighten a sense of discovery, privacy, and serenity. The building’s form is defined by a collection of rustic cedar boxes—rectilinear forms cradled by curving walls—that allow the resultant space to burrow into the earth. A reclaimed teak deck extends the interior space into the landscape, blurring the borders of each. A canopy of cantilevered lodge pole pine floats above the roof, shading the southern face of the building and its sundeck.
