With the decision to repurpose the two high-rise bunkers on Burgstraße for museum use, the buildings are undergoing a shift in function that must also be made visible to the outside world. The design aims to achieve this through architectural measures intended to serve as a striking visual symbol of the new functional orientation. This is achieved primarily by adding an additional floor to the existing roof surfaces of both buildings. As sculptural roof structures, they project far into the urban space. In addition, openings are cut into the exterior walls, allowing views into the interior of the bunkers and stripping the buildings of their defensive character. They aim to open up to the outside world, thereby breaking down barriers and inviting the public to engage with their contents.
In addition, the design aims to integrate the new museum more closely into its urban surroundings by enhancing the adjacent outdoor spaces.
For instance, the small plaza along Burgstraße—enclosed by the two bunkers and the neighboring residential and commercial building—will be redesigned to serve as a fitting entrance to the museum. To the north, the staircase beginning at Lämmergasse will be revitalized. On its way to the museum forecourt, it opens up halfway up into a newly created museum courtyard, which is intended to help the museum’s operations engage with the public space through exhibitions and accompanying events. The distribution of the various functions follows a simple principle. All exhibition areas are located in the northern building, while all special-purpose spaces are in the western one. The museum is entered via the latter. To create an inviting entrance here, the single-story porch will be removed and a large opening cut into the exterior wall bordering the square.
An underground passage connects the two buildings. By removing every other floor slab, the exhibition bunker gains spaces of adequate height. The three exhibition levels are connected via two new stairwells at the ends of the buildings, allowing for a flexible layout of the museum tours.
