FXFOWLE designed the North America campus expansion for SAP, the world’s third largest software provider. A glass-enclosed atrium serves as the building’s circulation spine and venue for corporate meetings and social gatherings. The full length of the atrium, shaded by a warmly-detailed “brise soleil” and enriched with a fieldstone wall at the base, imparts a sense of serenity and connection to natural elements. Green roofs weave the buildings into the landscape and serve as a key part of the calibrated system of sustainable strategies. The new complex reflects the company’s strong global image and provides much-needed additional space while allowing for incremental growth. The building’s distinctive design creates an inspirational working environment and embodies SAP’s technological leadership and environmental consciousness.
LEED-Platinum Certified by the USGBC, the project achieves the highest levels of energy efficiency by integrating high performance systems and maximizing the synergy between them. The mechanical system includes an ice storage system that produces ice at night, generating chilled water as it melts, as well as a geothermal-fueled radiant heating and cooling system on the atrium floor. The office areas have an under floor system to deliver air and distribute power and data. The building is clad in a triple glazing curtain wall system that has integrated exterior shades to the south; this triple glazing eliminates the need for perimeter heating components. The building's green roofs also increase the insulation value of the envelope, and together with the curtain wall, help reduce the size of the mechanical systems.
