SANCTUM is a nature-based retreat complex that explores architecture as an immersive experience, deeply rooted in Lithuania’s timber-building traditions and natural landscape. Designed as a harmonious extension of its environment, the project integrates a main building, accommodation cabins, wellness facilities, and outdoor spaces into existing forest clearings, preserving all mature trees and reinforcing a quiet dialogue between architecture and nature.
The design emphasizes modesty, tactility, and sensory connection. Timber—used both structurally and as a finishing material—defines the architectural expression, creating warm, atmospheric spaces that evolve with light, seasons, and time. The spatial composition balances openness and intimacy, offering diverse experiences: from communal gathering areas to secluded retreats.
A central courtyard acts as the organizing element, connecting interior and exterior spaces while fostering social interaction and contemplative pause. Flexible, naturally lit interiors support a variety of activities, while semi-open circulation and framed views maintain a constant relationship with the surrounding forest.
Sustainability and authenticity guide all design decisions, from material selection to engineering systems, including renewable energy use, water management, and low-impact construction methods.
