“Borrow scenery, infusing nature into a basement.”
The city of Taipei, being a highly densely populated area, almost all spaces available must be used to its maximum capacity, including basements. Despite its common perception as an uninhabitable location, due to expensive real estate, business owners often commercialize residential basements. In order to change the atmosphere of the basements, and what public usually perceive as dark and gloomy, we incorporated many design details to alter the location of SANADU Salon. By using stainless steel as ceiling material, its reflections elongate the space, giving the basement a more impressionable height.
SANADU Salon is a place where we use the simplicity of design to achieve purity, by abandoning any excessive ornamentation. Through transforming artistic conception of nature modestly, we hope that the space will lead customers into finding their own utopia within the mind. Located in the bustling district of Taipei City, in the basement of an old residential complex. We wanted to create an underground “forest” for all the women residing in the city to escape to, even without boarding a flight, one can still find serenity amidst this crowded area.
Through a well-designed circulation and configuration, the spacial journey mimicking forest at dawn, allows people to forget about their worries. The series of beautiful copper pipe and wood branch rises up and opens the mottled black iron gate, where there is a white space similar to that of a canvas, visually allows the mind to rest. We deliberately setback the lounge space in a courtyard, where an outside view not only captures the energy of the landscape but guides soft light through the interior. By the reflection of the mirror, the ceiling hanging full-dried lavender gives reflection to a mysterious mirage. The smell of lavender and spacial configuration helps to combat customer’s fatigue, putting one’s different senses to ease. The stainless steel plate embedded in the ceiling extends upward to another space through the reflection of the mirror. Thus, the basement is no longer perceived as a dark and gloomy level. With light brown veneer arch linking the spaces, a silent atmosphere is curated to guide the customer into a sense of serenity.
