Natural day-lighting, views to nature, energy efficiency, and extensive solar shading systems characterize the addition to the San Antonio Military Medical Center, (SAMMC) and radically transform the image of the entire complex. With the Burn Unit as one of the major program elements, the concept of skin grafting inspired the design of the exterior systems used in the new addition. Existing bricks were metaphorically extrapolated and grafted onto the addition in the form of terra-cotta brise-soleils which, when combined with major and minor sunscreens, protect burn patients from direct sunlight, both indoors and in sheltered exterior courts. The fortress-like architecture of the existing building is defined by deeply recessed punched windows in masonry walls. The exterior envelope of the new building complements its existing neighbor without mimicking it by engaging in a series of subtle planar compositions. Various horizontal and vertical screening devices in the new building evolve the entire composition from one of heaviness to an architecture of lightness and transparency. New and old are in dialogue, compatible yet distinguishable, each a window into its own time and its own cultural, technical, and architectural values.
