Located in the Kopų Žuvėdros quarter of Klaipėda, this single-family house is distinguished by its architecture, boldly breaking from conventional rectangular forms and drawing inspiration from the animal kingdom. Designed by the architectural firm G. Natkevičius ir partneriai, the building is conceptually based on the image of an elephant, with the primary material expression of this concept being the expressive terrace roof evoking the animal's trunk.
The building comprises two storeys plus a basement, encompassing a total area of approximately 252 m². Its volumetric composition is formed from a primary, relatively regular rectangular block and an attached dynamic, curved element – the roof covering the ground-floor terrace. This "trunk," as visible in the sections and elevations, not only serves its direct function of protecting the spacious, timber-decked outdoor terrace but also becomes the building's primary visual dominant and a signifier of its uniqueness. Its curved form descends sculpturally, visually grounding part of the building and creating an intriguing interplay between the solid masonry and the open glazed planes.
Functionally, the "trunk" covers the terrace, which is directly connected to the main ground-floor living area – the living/dining room. This arrangement effectively extends the interior space outwards, creating a sheltered and inviting leisure area.
The building's facades are dominated by clinker brick masonry cladding, which covers both the main volume and the "trunk" structure. This material lends the building a sense of solidity and durability, visually unifying its distinct parts. The solid masonry planes are punctuated by large windows and glazed openings, used particularly generously on the ground floor (living area) and the first floor, ensuring ample daylight penetration into the rooms and a strong connection with the surroundings. The main roof of the building is flat, highlighting the structure's modern aesthetic and allowing the curved "trunk" element to stand out prominently.
This residence in Klaipėda serves as an excellent example of how an architectural concept, even one based on a playful idea, can be successfully realised to create a functional, aesthetically appealing, and contextually distinctive building. The "elephant" motif, subtly yet clearly embodied in the form of the terrace roof, not only lends the building a distinct character but also showcases the architects' creativity and their ability to playfully manipulate forms and volumes.
