Built on the shore of a Laurentian lake, Y Residence is a single-family home designed for a recently retired, active couple who love nature and the landscapes of Lac Écho. With its "Y" shape, the project respectfully and humbly celebrates the site it's built on. The house encourages its inhabitants to move in a way that's influenced by light, framed views of the landscape, and the constant flow between the indoors and outdoors. Instead of simply viewing the landscape as a single, static painting, Y Residence attempts to frame it on multiple scales. The relationships between these different perspectives allow the residents to consciously inhabit the site they call home.
The architectural concept was born from two forces that seem to oppose each other: the clients’ desire for a friendly and robust house and the site's imperatives, which invite you to project yourself into the landscape by delicately weaving between the trees. The result is a volume segmented into three parts based on a functional and landscape-driven logic. This volumetric fragmentation has created interior spaces that are both vast and luminous while maintaining a friendly scale and a warm atmosphere, which is helped by the omnipresence of wood. The living areas extend dramatically toward the lake, taking advantage of the wooded environment and spectacular views, while also presenting a discreet presence from the street.
As a project that is both a continuation and a renewal of rural residential architecture, the home is inspired by and reinterprets local typologies to offer a design that integrates with the built cultural heritage. Just like other homes on the lakeshore, Y Residence has a more closed and discreet street-facing facade, while the facade facing the lake opens up to the landscape with generous windows. Certain elements are also directly inspired by common local practices, such as the large glazed veranda, which allows residents to enjoy the light and views in all seasons. From the living room window, which frames the main view of the lake, a large black volume unfolds above a lighter, fully-windowed volume. The roof is covered with metal panels with seams that recall the aesthetic of durable standing seam sheet metal roofs. The upper part of the facades is clad in stained genuine wood paneling. The dark color of the vertical planks catches the warm light and contrasts with the pale concrete slat cladding on the lower part. The extensive use of wood, both for structure and architecture, inside and out, further anchors the project in its environment. Finally, the project’s sober and durable materials, along with the attention to technical details to minimize premature aging, allows for minimal maintenance.
Located between the tranquility of Lac Écho, its abundant nature, and the bustling life of downtown Montreal, Y Residence moves away from formal compromises and subjective choices. It fully embraces its mission to provide its occupants with an inspiring, functional, healthy living environment that respects its surroundings—a true reflection of who they are, what they think, and what they value.
