THE PROBLEMS>THE
FOSSIL FUEL ISSUE: As
China elevates to the second biggest economy in the world, its insatiable power
consumption, especially the usage of fossil fuel energy, has cause an
exponential rise in air pollution to the whole country.THE
BAMBOO SCAFFOLDING PROBLEM:
87% of all constructions in China use bamboo scaffolding. After 5 to 6 usage
the fibers of the bamboo are stress beyond the point of safety and have to be
discarded. These bamboos are thrown into landfills which in term generates over
50,000 tones of wastage in china alone. Although the bamboo itself cannot be
employed as a load bearing material, it is still highly applicable in
architecture cladding construction which can also become near zero cleaning
maintenance because in the beauty of its rustic aesthetic and coloration.THE
PLASTIC BOTTLE NIGHTMARE:
China has just shamefully elevated to the third largest plastic bottle consumer
in the world and this number is rising. These bottles, although can be
partially be recyclable, are also discarded everywhere and in turn fills our
nature and sea with biodiversity threatening wastage. THE
INDUSTRIALIZATION OF AGRICULTURE WORRIES: As with any economy that is becoming more middle class
orientated, food consumption rises exponentially. China, having the largest
population density in the world faces this problem even more drastically than
any other nation. Due to this huge demand and pressure China’s agriculture has
become an astronomical business which in turn creates many cost cutting and
quantity inducing scams. Every day we see in news here about G.M.O (Genetically
Modified Organism) crops that might endanger our health as well as employment
of hazardous pesticides in order to increase cultivation quantity. Chinese
people are worried senseless on what they are eating and more are renting small
plots of area to grow their own supply. This is not enough as a solution as
city dwellers are becoming busier with work and time is against them to truly
give them time for personal organic cultivation.THE
ARCHAIC WIND POWER TECHNOLOGY ISSUE: Our
current employments of wind power
generating turbines are problematic in its physicality and power generation. A
large scale wind turbine can reach up to 80m in height with propeller blades in
excess of 15m each. All to produce a mere 1.5Mw (megawatt) of energy. It is an
extremely unsightly and land surface consuming structure as well as highly
expensive in construction and maintenance.SHANGHAI
FACES ALL THE ABOVE PROBLEMS LIKE ANY OTHER MAJOR CITIES IN CHINA AND AN
EVOLVING ARCHITECTURE SOLUTION HAS TO BE INITIATED. THE SOLUTIONS>THE
RECLAIMED BAMBOO SCAFFOLDING FACADE: Bamboo
is an organic material which changes coloration and texture through time,
humidity and erosion. It is ideal as a cladding material that accentuates the
quality of evolution and is practically nonexistent in maintenance if use in
this context. What if we can make a large architectural structure using
reclaimed bamboo scaffolding? This will reduce vastly the large wastage we generate
currently in china through this construction method and architecture of
“recycled trash” can bring about beauty to us again in a different light.THE
PLASTIC BOTTLE FARM: Intended
functionality of a product can be renewable thorough some careful consideration
and creativity. Artists are far better advocate on this then us architects
where rubbish can become beauty thorough imagination. As seen in the image
plant can be grown in empty cut bottles. What if we cluster thousands of this
into a porous skin for crop cultivation? What if we bring this concept to an
evolving farming community in a city? GROW
YOUR OWN STUFF: Since
so many people in china are worried about what they are eating let them grow
their own crops in their balcony and have total control of quality and
quantity. Freshness will be unequivocal in this aspect and you are your own
farmer. In order to do this we, as architects, need to give them space and high
sense of ease to reach their own crops. City people are busy and convenience is
a key.THE
WORLD FIRST CLUSTER WIND TURBINE GENERATOR: Since most designers are on the “Green Environment”
bandwagon we need to think outside the box or our current green tech in order
to paved for our future. Wind power is a great energy resource but currently it
is only limited to proper high energy employment in open natural spaces or seas
but our city is the highest power user. I say bring this technology to the
heart of the matter. I say rethink turbines in a far smaller scale and adapt it
into our dwellings. Imagine thousands of turbine clusters within a skyscraper
that can generate energy in access of 51Mw (megawatts). Each tower equals to
over 50 high power wind generator we are using right now and as towers are constructed
along the Suzhou Creek, More and more dangerous and polluting fossil fuel power
stations can be replaced.
