This project involved the fit-out of a new pizzeria restaurant in Bourke Road.
The existing shop is deep and narrow and the only natural light enters through the glazed shop-front and some high-level windows at the rear. An existing mezzanine level provided the opportunity to create a private dining area above. The aim was to create a warm, family environment using a palette of good quality, robust and refined materials like natural stone, timber, bronze, leather, painted steel and dark mirrors, to evoke a distinctly mediterranean feel. Proposed colours were kept to a minimum and predominantly earthy in tones. Suspended timber beams visually break-up the extensive ceiling and create acoustic buffers (a problem often over-looked in many dining venues).
A semi-circular bar & wood-fired pizza oven is located at the front of the space, to provide a striking feature element that interrupts the deep space and encourages interraction between staff and customers. The oven is lined with small mosaic tiles to create a “jewel in the crown” element, highlighting it’s importance within the space.
