Between the Walls studio transformed a former Soviet-era store into a contemporary fashion showroom by embracing rather than erasing its history, preserving authentic shell rock walls and anodized aluminum display cases while supplementing original materials with natural Rivne stone to create historical continuity. The design's power lies in its material authenticity, where original shell rock fragments were restored and combined with regional stone, creating a narrative of place and time that maintains structural integrity. Custom matte metal clothing rails echo existing architectural arches, serving as both organizational elements and spatial sculptures that guide movement through the store, while polished concrete floors provide monolithic stability against organic wall textures. Microcement surfaces literally incorporate coastal materials of sand and shells that reference the space's geological origins, supporting the overall concept of naturalness and material tranquility. Rich green velvet curtains define intimate fitting areas, creating privacy and visual depth, while a carefully curated seating area with Dedar fabric sofa and Noguchi lamp maintains the natural color palette. The integration of Tamara Turlyun's site-specific paper and wire sculpture transforms the space from purely commercial to emotionally resonant, exploring themes of care and domesticity. The project demonstrates how sensitive renovation can honor architectural memory while creating contemporary relevance through thoughtful material choices and spatial storytelling, prioritizing feelings of silence, respect, and thoughtfulness over mere spectacle.
