"As Stephen Hawking stated, humanity's greatest achievements have been obtained in encounters, and its greatest failures in non-encounters or, worse, in clashes. Today, this is more true than ever, and it is necessary and urgent to foster the birth of collaborations because we have enormous potential in terms of expertise and technology to be used, especially for the sake of Life. Architecture, through the creation of pleasant, reassuring, and stimulating environments and a conscious distribution of functions, is a tool to make human contact and the consequent transfer of knowledge more accessible and immediate." Architecture as a vector of relationships. AMDL CIRCLE has designed a contemporary and recognizable architectural complex. It consists of two newly constructed towers that complete the OpenZone scientific campus in Bresso, conceived with the aim of creating bridges between different worlds, languages, and skills. The project focuses on the attractive force and potential of architecture as a vector of relationships to strengthen OpenZone's role as a place to transform research into business.
The towers: outposts for research and innovation. The two linear volumes, with a rectangular plan – the first with thirteen floors, two of which are underground, for a height of 45 meters, and the second with ten floors, also with two underground, for 32 meters – host laboratories and offices. The towers enter a space dedicated to research, like outposts that connect the nature of the Parco Nord with a scientific and technologically advanced context, adding value to an area that is increasingly defining its intended use. Symbolically, the concept of an outpost recalls the historical function of facilitating the urbanization of uninhabited areas and the entrance to progress. The AMDL CIRCLE project brings together offices and laboratories, but above all, it creates a meeting place where the advantages of an efficient and productive encounter between operators in the health and life sciences sector can emerge.
A texture of shingles to dress the architecture. AMDL CIRCLE entrusts the external cladding in white opacified glass shingles with the task of connecting the two towers and giving them a distinct character in the urban context. The distance of the texture from the building (about 80 cm) facilitates maintenance interventions thanks to the insertion of walkways in the cavity and contributes to creating a sculptural effect, accentuated by the checkerboard arrangement of the shingles. The alternation of solids and voids builds a partial screen, which guarantees shading efficiency to protect the work environments and creates a peculiar refraction of light. The plays of light and the reflections generated emphasize the dynamic effect of the texture, which envelops the two volumes in a single architectural object with a light appearance.
The Green Circle for research and training. Next to the towers, a two-story circular pavilion covered in green is intended to host research and innovation professionals. The entirely glazed volume is built on a metal frame, onto which a second supporting structure in wood is grafted. A second skin of steel cables envelops the pavilion and integrates large planters to encourage the growth of climbing plants that will animate an architecture that changes with the passing of the seasons. It is a transparent workplace that promotes visual contact with the outside and a connection with the nature of the park, which are fundamental prerogatives of an architecture focused on the well-being of those who work there. AMDL CIRCLE has defined a flexible space, where the absence of divisions stimulates collaboration and allows for adaptation to the continuous transformations of the world of work. The two floors of the building are illuminated by natural light that filters through the climbing plants, from the skylight in the center of the ceiling, and from the void that connects the spaces.
A green podium to access the complex. The three buildings rest on a single podium, which raises them from street level. This base includes two underground and two above-ground floors for parking and technical rooms, and creates a common space to access the interiors. The perimeter walls consist of a weave of metal rods that masks the parking lots and promotes the diffusion of natural light. The roof of the podium is designed as a lawn, to reiterate the desire to integrate green into a specialized and technological building. Creating a dialogue between architecture and nature is the constant commitment of the design poetics of AMDL CIRCLE.
The podium also houses a glazed volume that integrates the functions of access, reception, and interaction in a hybrid space to be experienced. The interior is characterized by wooden finishes, which is confirmed as a material of choice for AMDL CIRCLE. A monumental staircase leads to the foyer and, as in other projects by the studio, the steps become potential seats for an auditorium.
