Located on the south bank of the Tagus River in Barreiro, Nooba is conceived as a new residential neighborhood, shaped by its proximity to the estuary and the profound urban transformation underway in the former industrial areas of the south bank. The project occupies a strategic position within a broad process of urban and environmental requalification, in which new public spaces, mobility infrastructure, and ecological corridors redefine the city's relationship with the river. Its planning framework responds to this metropolitan condition by proposing a neighborhood that balances density with openness, placing housing as the engine of daily urban life and reinforcing continuity with the redeveloped riverfront.
The development strategy is structured in successive phases, allowing the neighborhood to grow in a controlled and coherent manner. The residential plots are grouped to optimize construction efficiency, improve the organization of underground parking, and allow for flexible combinations of building volumes. This phased approach also reduces the impact of ongoing construction on existing residents, ensuring that each stage delivers a complete and functional environment. The ground floors are designed to accommodate complementary uses and shared amenities, reinforcing safety, social interaction, and a sense of belonging at the block and street scale.
Architecturally, Nooba seeks to introduce a contemporary domestic language that contrasts with the aging built environment of Barreiro, while still remaining accessible and rooted in the place. The housing typologies respond to the needs of families seeking generous spaces and a strong connection with the outdoors, supported by terraces and good sun exposure. Public space plays a central role, with pedestrian paths, green areas, and proximity to a future marina and transport hubs, shaping a lifestyle defined by walkability and connection to Lisbon.
