The Neal Math + Science Academy, located in North Chicago, is currently serving as a catalyst for positive change within a community that has an unfortunate history of being underserved and underdeveloped. In 2019, AbbVie Pharmaceuticals proudly announced a $40 million grant to support the redevelopment of this proud community education system. Therefore, the JGMA team proposed a design that aims to equally enhance the positive change in this community. The design introduces a psychical beacon of hope within the neighborhood by offering a unique solution for a middle school facility, the idea of going upwards.
This concept follows the idea of pride by proudly standing tall within a community that wishes to break the stigma of underdevelopment. The design also integrates some of the schools core math and science concepts within the facade by conceptually abstracting common scientific forms and introducing them on the building’s facade. Subsequently creating a playful rhythmic effect that encourages an active learning atmosphere on both the inside and out, allowing for both teaching and learning to be done in all locations across school grounds. Aiming to set a new standard of how teaching and learning can be done within educational systems.
