Inspired by the timeless civic architecture of the region, MODL (Municipality of the District of Luneburg) is both contemporary and traditional in its composition. A gentle, low-lying, cranked hip roof form sitting atop a modest and familiar base composed of buff brick and wood. The form is anchored by a chimney, which draws natural light into the entry hall. Brightly lit spaces and large views of the surrounding area make for healthy work spaces. The economical wood framed construction utilized locally-sourced materials.
Omar Gandhi Architect worked closely with the municipality’s various stakeholders to develop a plan and design that reflected the culture of the area and gave an identity to the region. Learning to work with a broad user group and find the right balance for the design amongst the competing voices was an invaluable experience for our practice. The building will house the council chambers, municipal offices, public meeting spaces, and washroom facilities.
The project is designed in collaboration with IBI Group.
