The home town of Edwin Hubble is the perfect place for Missouri State University to expand its already established astronomy program with a new observatory with a public purpose. Located among the rolling farmland hills outside of Marshfield, Missouri, this project will expand the university’s ability to provide educational and outreach programs for others outside the department. An existing pair of telescopes will be complemented by a new facility that provides a large meeting room and research support facilities and will accommodate a third telescope in the future. The design of the building is inspired by the spiraling gestures of galaxies, with an exterior ramp that leads to a vegetated roof sloped toward the sky serving as an outdoor assembly space for nighttime stargazing.
