Egan Mill Public Market, Quyon
Located in Quyon, Québec, the Egan Mill is a nearly 200-year-old industrial landmark deeply rooted in the region’s agrarian and economic history. This project proposes the adaptive reuse and contemporary expansion of the historic mill, transforming it into a public market and community destination while preserving its strong industrial character.
The intervention carefully balances heritage conservation and contemporary architecture. The original mill structure is restored and reactivated, celebrating its vertical massing, robust materiality, and historical presence along the landscape. A new architectural volume is introduced as a clear yet respectful contrast, using restrained forms and modern materials to distinguish old from new without competing with the original mill.
The expansion houses a public market program—including local food vendors, artisanal producers, and gathering spaces—organized around generous interior volumes filled with natural light. Large glazed openings reconnect the interior to the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the mill’s relationship to place, movement, and community life.
Inside, warm materials such as wood ceilings, textured stone, and exposed structural elements create a dialogue between industrial heritage and contemporary comfort. Circulation spaces are designed as social corridors, encouraging interaction, lingering, and visual connections between levels. The project positions the Egan Mill not as a static monument, but as a living civic anchor, supporting local economies and reinforcing Quyon’s cultural identity.
