A five-minute walk from Kita-Kamakura Station, this wooden two-story building stands quietly within the lush grounds of a temple. Originally built as a residence and later used as a gallery, the property was eventually taken over by the client, a hairdresser.
The first floor had already been renovated into a hair salon. This project focused on transforming the second floor in order to expand the scale and potential of the salon.
The client couple are open-minded and deeply connected to their community through work, hobbies, and local activities. Both are passionate surfers who cherish a life close to nature. In recent years, their creative pursuits have expanded, with photography and videography—once a hobby—growing into professional work. The new second-floor space was therefore conceived not with a fixed function, but as a place holding generous “margin” or openness—allowing their lifestyle, ideas, and activities to continue evolving freely.
The concept evokes both the freedom of an “attic room” and the special feeling of a “secret base.”
The floor is divided into two rooms: the main space is finished in white, while the other adopts a soft pale pink. These tones express the couple’s open character and the gentle shifts created by natural wind and light.
Mirrors are designed to be removable. Once detached, softly curved plaster walls with rounded (R-shaped) bases are revealed on all four sides. The corners of the space are also gently rounded, and the continuous plaster finish enhances both a sense of spatial expansion and a subtle feeling of being embraced.
Natural light filters in through narrow slits and shoji screens, softly illuminating the white and pink walls and amplifying brightness throughout the space. The changing daylight carries with it the atmosphere of the sea and nature—elements that are intimate and essential to the clients’ lives.
At times, the space becomes a photo studio; at others, a gallery or pop-up store. The hair salon evolves into a broader “salon” in the original sense of the word—a place where people gather, connect, and exchange ideas.
As time passes, the space will continue to shift in expression, growing alongside the clients’ lives and opening new possibilities for the future.
